Maui Fishing License Requirement: What Visitors Need to Know Before Casting a Line

Planning to fish in Maui? Heads up! Hawaii requires nonresidents to have a fishing license before fishing in the ocean.

If fishing is on your Maui vacation itinerary, there's an important rule you'll want to know about before heading out.

Hawaii has specific fishing license requirements for visitors, and knowing the rules ahead of time can save you some hassle during your trip. Here's what you need to know so you can focus on enjoying your time on the water.

Who Needs a Fishing License in Maui?

If you're visiting from out of state and you're 15 or older, you'll need a Nonresident Recreational Marine Fishing License to fish in Hawaii's ocean waters.

This applies whether you're fishing from the beach, heading out on your own boat, or joining a recreational fishing charter.

There are a few exceptions, though. You won't need this license if you're:

  • A Hawaii resident fishing recreationally in the ocean

  • Under 15 years old

  • An active-duty military member or qualifying dependent covered by the state's exemption

If you're visiting Maui and none of these exceptions apply to you, getting your license should be part of your fishing plans.

How Much Does a Hawaii Fishing License Cost?

The cost depends on how long you plan to fish:

  • 1-Day License: $20

  • 7-Day License: $40

  • Annual License: $70

Additional online processing fees may apply.

Just planning a day of fishing? The one-day license may be all you need.
